The event, funded as part of a state budget initiative led by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, has sparked a debate on how taxpayer money is allocated and used.

“This isn’t Santa’s workshop, it’s the Statehouse,” said Dunn (R-Morris). “Transparency brings accountability. Accountability brings trust in our government. Unfortunately, taxpayers are funding things blindly, and that’s how you get a taxpayer-funded platform for anti-Semites siding with Hamas.”

The controversial event, hosted by the mayor’s Brick City Peace Collective, honored Baraka’s late father, Amiri Baraka, a former poet laureate stripped of his title and required to return a $10,000 award due to anti-Semitic views. The event took place on the same day that Hamas launched an attack on Israel. “The timing couldn’t be worse, but the fact that hate has a platform in any case should be categorically condemned,” Dunn added.

Assemblywoman Dunn pointed out that nearly $1.5 billion in ‘pork’ was added to this year’s state budget by Democrats, without any state laws requiring beneficiaries to disclose how the funds will be utilized. “Taxpayers work hard for their money and deserve to have access to how it is used,” she said.

According to Dunn, special interest funding has significantly increased since Governor Phil Murphy was elected in 2018, rising by approximately 1400% from $89 million in 2019. “The governor proposes pork spending too,” Dunn noted, arguing that the recent incident involving the Newark event underscores the urgent need for budget transparency.

To tackle this issue, Dunn proposed a bill last year requiring each budget resolution to be published by June 1, with the budget to be passed before July 1. The resolutions, to be voted on by the Senate and Assembly budget committees, would provide a detailed explanation of each appropriation, thereby increasing transparency and accountability.
