New York, NY – A massive gas explosion ripped through a Bronx high-rise early Saturday morning, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others after firefighters had arrived to investigate reports of a gas odor, according to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
The blast occurred around 12:09 a.m. at 3485 Bivonia Street, where FDNY units were checking for the source of a reported gas smell on the building’s upper floors. As firefighters reached the 15th and 16th floors, an explosion erupted, causing extensive structural damage and igniting fires across multiple apartments.

Chief of Department John Esposito described the scene as one of the most dangerous operations firefighters could face. “While our units were here investigating the odor of gas on the 15th and 16th floors, we had members on the 16th floor when the explosion occurred. We had severe structural damage in six apartments on each floor. We eventually had fire in five apartments on the 16th floor and five apartments on the 17th floor,” Esposito said. “It was a very, very dangerous operation for our firefighters, who performed incredibly on those upper floors, searching and protecting civilian life.”
One person was killed in the explosion, and FDNY EMS transported 15 others to nearby hospitals for treatment of injuries ranging from burns to smoke inhalation. Firefighters continued to conduct searches throughout the morning to ensure no additional victims were trapped in the debris.
FDNY Fire Marshals are leading the investigation into the cause of the explosion. Early indications point to a gas buildup, though officials say it is too early to determine the exact source.
The explosion caused significant damage to at least six apartments per floor, and residents of the 15th through 17th floors have been displaced. Multiple city agencies, including the American Red Cross, are on the scene to assist affected families with temporary housing and emergency needs.
Con Edison crews are also working alongside FDNY personnel to secure gas lines and ensure the building’s structural integrity.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased victim pending family notification.
The explosion adds to a troubling pattern of gas-related incidents in New York City, where aging infrastructure has prompted repeated calls for improved monitoring and safety inspections.
