As enery prices soar JCP&L urges New Jersey customers to seek bill help as winter protections end

Utility company highlights assistance programs and schedules in-person help event in Ocean County.

Morristown, NJ – Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) is urging customers across New Jersey to explore available energy assistance programs following the end of the state’s Winter Termination Program, which had protected certain households from service shutoffs during colder months.

The company said seasonal temperature swings often lead to increased energy usage and higher bills, prompting renewed outreach to customers who may be struggling to keep up with payments.

Doug Mokoid, President of FirstEnergy New Jersey, emphasized the company’s support efforts. “When temperatures swing to extremes like they did this winter, many customers use more energy to heat or cool their homes, which can lead to higher electric bills,” Mokoid said. “No one should feel stressed about staying comfortable and safe at home. If you’re concerned about paying your electric bill, please reach out – our dedicated team is here to help you find options and get back on track.”

Assistance programs available for eligible households

JCP&L is directing customers to several state and federal programs designed to reduce energy costs or provide payment support. Among them is the Universal Service Fund (USF), which offers monthly bill credits and may eliminate past-due balances through its Fresh Start initiative for qualifying households.

Eligibility for USF generally requires income at or below 60% of the state median and energy costs exceeding a set percentage of household income.
