NEWTOWN, Conn. — The assistant fire chief for the Botsford Fire Department was fatally struck by a pickup truck on Tuesday night as he crossed the street to attend a fire commission meeting, officials said.

The incident occurred on Church Hill Road near its intersection with Dayton Street, according to the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association. The victim, identified as Peter Blomberg, 72, was on his way to the meeting when the collision happened.

Newtown police said the driver of the pickup truck stopped immediately and remained at the scene. Authorities did not provide additional details about the driver or the circumstances surrounding the incident, which remains under investigation.

Blomberg’s death marks the second loss of a first responder in Connecticut within a week. The fire service community had just laid to rest Firefighter Joshua Sharkevich hours earlier. “It’s unimaginable to comprehend that less than 8 hours of laying FF Sharkevich to rest, the CT Fire Service has suffered another tragic loss,” the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association said in a statement.

The organization expressed condolences to Blomberg’s family and the Newtown emergency services community, asking people to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time.
