Atlantic city mayor called for demolition of trump plaza, he just got his wish

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Mayor Marty Small has called for the demolition of the vacant Trump Plaza on the boardwalk in Atlantic City. After filing court papers, the judge gave the owners of the building a 45-day window to save the building. Instead, the owner, Icahn Enterprises has submitted plans for demolishing the building. Small said debris has fallen from the building as it falls into disrepair. Small said he is hoping a developer presents a plan to rebuild on the site once the building is demolished.

The entire structure will be imploded, including the tower above the Rainforest Cafe. Small wants the building down by the end of the year, Icahn is planning on imploding the building by June of 2021.

The building is owned now by investor Carl Icahn, the senior lender of the building, who blocked a 2013 sale by Trump of $20 million to the Meruelo Group. Icahn held the mortgage on the building. In 2014, the casino closed its doors for good.

Scott Evans, Atlantic City said, “This is a great day for Atlantic City, vacant buildings are not good for communities, especially vacant hi-rises. We’ve had sheet metal fly across the boardwalk, numerous panels have fallen from the tower. To me, this is great news, it’s been a huge concern…and very nerve-wracking when we get high winds.”

A net will be put around the building in the near future to ensure the safety of the boardwalk.
