Attorney General identifies man killed in Newark police involved shooting

Newark, NJ – The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has identified both the officer and the civilian involved in a fatal police shooting that occurred January 19, 2026, in Newark. The man who died was 42-year-old Wali Bey of Newark, authorities said Friday.

According to the preliminary investigation, plainclothes and uniformed Newark Police officers were conducting surveillance near Ross Street and Evergreen Avenue around 1 p.m. when the incident occurred. Officer Nashid Reynolds exited his vehicle and approached fellow officers and several civilians detained during the operation. Moments later, Reynolds fired his service weapon, striking Bey and another individual inside a nearby vehicle.

Both civilians were transported to University Hospital, where Bey was pronounced deceased at 1:51 p.m. The second person was treated for injuries and later released. No officers were injured during the encounter.
