Baby Monitor Video Shows Teen Killing Own Mother as Infant Slept Nearby

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL – Prosecutors have released disturbing evidence, including surveillance photos, in the case of a teenage boy accused of murdering his mother. Derek Rosa, 13, has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder for the death of his mother, Irina Garcia, 39, while she was asleep near her 14-day-old baby.

One of the released images from surveillance footage dated October 12, 2023, shows Garcia in bed holding her infant daughter at 10:23 p.m. with the lights on. Another image, captured at 11 p.m. that night, depicts a male figure standing over the bed in the now-dark room.

Garcia sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck, as detailed in the arrest affidavit. The majority of the evidentiary photos released by prosecutors focus on the murder weapon, a blood- and hair-covered kitchen knife with a missing tip. These images are reported to be graphic.

Additionally, prosecutors released a photo showing Rosa making a ‘shaka’ sign with a hand covered in red, an image he allegedly sent to friends. Law&Crime is currently investigating the timing of this photo for further details.
