MIDDLE RIVER, MD. — A Baltimore County police officer shot an armed woman Thursday morning during a confrontation in the 1000 block of Carroll Island Road, authorities said.

Officers went to the area after receiving a request to check a location connected to an armed woman wanted in an assault, according to the Baltimore County Police Department. Police found the woman sitting inside a vehicle and began speaking with her.

She initially surrendered a knife. Police said the woman later produced a firearm, prompting one officer to open fire.

Officers secured the scene and provided medical aid. An ambulance took the woman to an area hospital with a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound.

Investigators recovered a firearm from inside her vehicle. Authorities did not identify the woman or release details about the alleged assault.

The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave under department policy. The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting.
