NEW YORK, NY — NYPD officers shot a knife-wielding man on the Brooklyn Bridge early Friday, shutting down parts of the span as commuters headed into the city.

Traffic quickly backed up.

Officers went to the bridge after receiving a report of a person who needed help, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the incident.

The encounter turned violent.

Sources said the man pulled a knife and charged at the officers, prompting police to open fire and strike him.

His condition was unclear.

The shooting triggered a heavy emergency response and forced police to close the pedestrian walkway and restrict access around the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge.

City officials issued their first warning at 4:26 a.m.

A second Notify NYC alert went out at 6:30 a.m., warning drivers about traffic delays, road closures and a large emergency-services presence near the bridge.

Commuters were told to find another route.

The NYPD had not released the number of officers who fired, whether officers first used other tactics or how many times the man was struck.

No officer injuries were reported.

Police had not identified the man or disclosed his medical condition as of 7:43 a.m.
