DES MOINES, Iowa — College basketball star Caitlin Clark voiced her support for amplifying the contributions of Black women in the WNBA, highlighting the critical role they have played in shaping the league.
In a recent statement, Clark reflected on her position of privilege and the importance of celebrating the accomplishments of Black players, who have long been central to the league’s success. “A lot of those players in the league that have been really good have been Black players. This league has kind of been built on them,” Clark said.
Clark emphasized the need for increased investment and visibility for Black athletes from sponsors and brands, noting that the effort to elevate them must be intentional. “The more we can appreciate that, highlight that, talk about that, and then continue to have brands and companies invest in those players that have made this league incredible, I think it’s very important,” she stated.
Acknowledging her own influence and responsibility, the University of Iowa standout stressed the role she and others can play in promoting equity. “I want to say I’ve earned every single thing, but as a white person, there is privilege,” she said. “The more we can elevate Black women, that’s going to be a beautiful thing.”
Clark’s comments come as conversations about race, representation, and equity in professional sports continue to grow, with many athletes pushing for systemic change and greater inclusivity across leagues.
