PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. – Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 2,152 calls for service from December 1 through December 7, handling a range of incidents from thefts and drug offenses to welfare checks and motor vehicle crashes.
According to the department’s weekly police blotter, deputies conducted more than 1,100 patrol and school checks, 245 traffic stops, and 55 traffic complaint responses during the period. A total of 53 arrests were made.
One of the week’s most serious incidents occurred December 6, when DFC Newton encountered a man urinating in the parking lot of the Dash Inn gas station on East Chesapeake Beach Road in Owings. The suspect, identified as Daniel Lee Riggs, 64, of Lothian, was found in possession of crack cocaine, PCP, and drug paraphernalia. Riggs allegedly resisted arrest before being taken into custody. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute PCP, possession of controlled substances, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.
Deputies also handled a series of theft cases across the county. On December 1, a Gravely zero-turn mower valued at $6,500 was recovered in a wooded area off Sixes Road in Prince Frederick and traced to a local business from which it had been taken. On December 2, Walmart staff in Dunkirk reported a shoplifting incident that led to the arrest of Avelino Tavares DaSilva Junior, 49, of São Paulo, Brazil, for allegedly stealing $103.09 in merchandise.
That same day in Port Republic, deputies investigated the theft of nearly $1,000 in HexClad cookware and cutlery from a delivery order. Two additional thefts were reported later in the week — one involving a wallet stolen from a shopper’s purse at the Giant grocery store in Prince Frederick, and another at a Dunkirk CVS, where Curtis Sequan Cannon, 33, of Washington, D.C., was charged with shoplifting $356.25 worth of items, drug possession, and possessing contraband while confined.
Between December 1 and December 7, school-related incidents resulted in one criminal arrest, no controlled substance arrests, and two civil citations.
Deputies also made five DUI arrests during the same period. Those charged were John W. Tippett Jr., 61, of Bryans Road; John A. Noftsinger III, 55, of St. Leonard; Wesley V. Hickerson, 37, of Dunkirk; Ralph L. Board Sr., 66, of California, Md.; and David A. Johnson Sr., 47, of Prince Frederick.
The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies remain focused on proactive patrols and community safety as the holiday season continues.
