AKRON, Ohio – Dozens of officers from across Summit County traded patrols for shopping carts over the weekend, coming together for the annual Shop with a Cop program that treated local children to a day of holiday cheer and generosity.

The event, held Saturday, brought together the Akron Police Department, Springfield Township Police, Lakemore Police, New Franklin Police, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Uniontown Police, the Ohio Division of Wildlife, and the Springfield Township Fire Department. The day began with breakfast at Springfield High School, where the children met their law enforcement partners before heading out under lights and sirens for a convoy to the Walmart in Springfield Township.

Each child received a $200 gift card to spend as they wished, with officers assisting as the kids picked out clothes, toys, and gifts for their families. Following the shopping trip, participants returned to Springfield High School, where Santa and Mrs. Claus were waiting to share pizza donated by Gionino’s.

Akron Police officials thanked the Akron Crime Clinic for its donation, which enabled the department to sponsor five children for the event. They also credited Springfield Police for coordinating the program, Springfield High School for hosting, Walmart for its hospitality, and the many volunteers who helped make the day possible.

Organizers said the annual Shop with a Cop program continues to strengthen relationships between officers and the community, turning a simple shopping trip into a memorable holiday tradition for local families.
