UTICA, N.Y. – A Utica man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a woman and injuring a police officer during a violent domestic incident late Tuesday night on the city’s east side.
Around 10:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to a home on the 1200 block of Lansing Street for a reported domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, they spoke with a woman who told police that her child’s father, identified as 34-year-old Ryum Calhoun of Utica, arrived at the residence and began arguing with her. According to police, the confrontation turned physical when Calhoun struck the woman in the face.
Another person at the scene intervened, separating the two, but investigators said Calhoun then attempted to choke the victim by placing his hands around her neck. After being pushed outside, he allegedly broke a window before leaving the immediate area.
As officers interviewed the victim, they spotted Calhoun nearby and tried to stop him. Police said he fled on foot, leading officers on a short chase to the 800 block of Bacon Street. When officers caught up with him, Calhoun allegedly fought violently, injuring one officer’s hand during the struggle. The officer later sought treatment at Wynn Hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered broken bones.
Calhoun was taken into custody and charged with assault in the second degree, obstruction of breathing, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, endangering the welfare of a child (two counts), and harassment in the second degree. Two children were reportedly present during the incident.
Police said the investigation has been completed and Calhoun was processed at the Utica Police Department before being remanded to custody pending arraignment.
