Officers say Gary Ray Bookheimer Jr. was wanted for failing to appear in court on drug charges when they encountered him near Bridge Street
CUMBERLAND, MD – A routine patrol through a Cumberland park led officers to a 62-year-old man wanted for failing to appear in court, and police say a search following his arrest uncovered suspected controlled substances and drug paraphernalia.
The encounter happened Monday while Cumberland Police Department officers were patrolling a park in the area of Bridge Street.
Officers spotted a man they recognized as being wanted on an arrest warrant for failing to appear in court on controlled dangerous substance charges, according to police.
Police identified the man as Gary Ray Bookheimer Jr., 62, of Cumberland.
Officers contacted Bookheimer and placed him under arrest.
During a search of Bookheimer following the arrest, officers allegedly discovered a quantity of suspected controlled dangerous substances and associated paraphernalia.
Police said another search of his belongings at the scene uncovered an additional suspected controlled dangerous substance.
Bookheimer was taken to Cumberland Police headquarters, where he was issued criminal citations for the alleged drugs and paraphernalia.
Police listed his charges as failure to appear on CDS charges, three counts of CDS possession and CDS paraphernalia possession.
Bookheimer was later taken before a district court commissioner and released on his own recognizance pending trial.
The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
