Capitol Heights retiree uncovered 10 separate $5,000 prizes on one ticket
CAPITOL HEIGHTS, MD – A Maryland retiree turned a routine $5 scratch-off purchase into a $50,000 payday after returning home and uncovering one $5,000 prize after another until 10 of them appeared on the same ticket.
The Capitol Heights woman, whose name was not released by the Maryland Lottery, won the top prize playing the $5 Cash Scratch Fever game.
The regular Lottery player enjoys scratch-offs, Racetrax and Keno and had stopped at Central Exxon at 6400 Central Avenue in Capitol Heights after spending time with her daughter.
Among the tickets she purchased was the Cash Scratch Fever scratch-off.
After returning home, the woman began scratching her tickets and noticed $5,000 prizes appearing as she worked her way down the winning ticket.
More $5,000 prizes continued to appear.
At first, the retiree thought there had been a mistake.
She immediately called her younger sister, who examined the ticket and confirmed what the player was seeing.
The ticket contained 10 separate $5,000 prizes, bringing the total win to $50,000.
The woman went to Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore on Tuesday to claim her prize with her daughter by her side.
The winner previously worked for the Washington, DC, government before retiring nearly 20 years ago.
She described those years of retirement as wonderful and said retirement was the best job she ever had.
Central Exxon will also benefit from the win.
The Capitol Heights retailer will receive a $500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery for selling the $50,000 top-prize ticket.
The Cash Scratch Fever game still has three $50,000 top prizes remaining, according to the Lottery.
Five second-tier prizes worth $5,000 also remain.
For one Capitol Heights retiree, a $5 ticket picked up during a regular Lottery stop delivered 10 separate wins on the same piece of cardboard and a $50,000 payday.
