It was said that hugh mercer a brigadier general in the continental army took shelter under the tree after being mortally wounded, refusing to give ground to the british on january 3, 1777. The tree was about 300 years old when it was destroyed in a storm in 2000. The tree standing in the spot now grew from an acorn from the original.
