Cincinnati mom pleads not guilty to child endangerment charges

Cincinnati, OH – A mother is facing serious charges after being accused of abusing her young son. Jennifer Parker, 43, appeared in court on Wednesday to plead not guilty to three counts of child endangerment.

Prosecutors allege that Parker engaged in hospital shopping, bringing her two-year-old son to medical facilities for conditions he did not have. According to Assistant Butler County Prosecutor Lindsay Sheehan, the child has been hospitalized more than 20 times under Parker’s care since birth.

Sheehan informed the court that Parker’s children were removed from her custody in May. Since the removal, the two-year-old has reportedly not been hospitalized and is thriving.

Concerns were raised by staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Clinic regarding Parker’s treatment of her son. Allegations include that she interfered with his ability to eat properly and provided unnecessary medical interventions, such as insulin.

In court, Sheehan noted that staff cited instances where Parker did not provide appropriate medical care and refused to transition her son off a feeding tube that he may not have needed.

Parker addressed claims against her in a Facebook post, stating that she was not the only parent under scrutiny by hospital staff. She mentioned another parent who faced similar allegations by the same inpatient team.

Her fiancé, Michael Carpenter, spoke to the media following the court session, defending Parker as a caring mother who sought the best for her children. He mentioned their son’s ongoing health issues since birth.

Parker was arrested on Monday and is being held on a $50,000 bond at Butler County Jail. She was ordered not to contact her children, who remain under the care of Butler County Children Services. Her next court appearance, for a plea or trial setting, is scheduled for Nov. 24.

Suspect in social media catfish killing sentenced to 25 years in prison

Suspect in social media catfish killing sentenced to 25 years in prison

Waco, TX Cyle Flores, 18, was sentenced to 25 years in state prison after pleading guilty to murder on Thursday. Flores is one of four individuals involved in a scheme to lure a man to his death through deceptive social media tactics.

In 2021, he and three accomplices, Jeremiah Marquez, 18, Justin Angel Hernandez, 22, and Edgar Alfonso Castillo, 17, used Facebook Messenger to entice 22-year-old Israel Martinez to a home on Gurley Avenue, where he was murdered.

Flores is the last member of the group to accept a plea deal, avoiding a trial.

The initial charges for each defendant included capital murder. Prosecutors ultimately negotiated lesser murder pleas for the defendants, leading to varying sentences with the possibility of parole.

The crime transpired on September 19, 2021, when Martinez was misled into believing he was meeting a woman named “Kaelani Moore.” This identity was part of a catfishing scheme orchestrated by Hernandez and the three teenagers.

The scheme involved communication through a fake account which led to Martinez being instructed to transfer money to a different app user.

Detectives traced the fake profile back to Hernandez, who used the name “Kaelani Moore” to deceive Martinez.

Martinez arrived at the location around 10:00 PM, where he was shot multiple times with various firearms from inside the residence while the defendants were reportedly escaping through a back window.

Following the murder, the account used to lure Martinez was deleted.

Law enforcement believes Hernandez and Marquez were the shooters, although all four participants faced similar charges.

While the minors could not face the death penalty, Hernandez could have but accepted a plea deal instead.

Hernandez and Marquez received 35-year sentences, Castillo received 30 years, and Flores received 25 years, with all to serve a minimum of half their sentences before becoming eligible for parole.

Prosecutors emphasized their commitment to addressing gun violence in the community.

Gary, IN A 26-year-old man faces multiple charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend to death during a domestic dispute at their home. Charles Franklin is charged with murder, domestic battery in the presence of a child, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

The shooting occurred Monday afternoon in the 2400 block of Pennsylvania Street. Franklin and his girlfriend, 26-year-old Arrianna Miles, were arguing when the incident escalated.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Miles was discussing ending their relationship and referencing past disputes. She reportedly grabbed a sawn-off shotgun from a closet, leading to a physical confrontation where the gun discharged.

Franklin called 911, claiming Miles had been shot. When asked by the dispatcher if the shooting was intentional, he hesitated before responding “no.”

Miles was heard saying, “Why would you do that?” Shortly after, she stated, “I’m dying,” before losing consciousness.

Police arrived to find Miles on a sofa with a gunshot wound to her abdomen. She requested officers to “please get him away from me,” before being taken to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy confirmed that she died from a close-range gunshot wound. Investigators expressed skepticism about Franklin’s account, noting the trajectory of the shot and the presence of multiple shotgun shells in the home.

Man accused of murdering girlfriend brings body to police station

Phoenix, AZ A man has been charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly shot his girlfriend in the head during an argument and then transported her corpse to a Phoenix police station. Josue Barreras Anaya, 36, is accused of killing Jessica Guzman, 32, at his home on Tuesday morning.

Court documents indicate Anaya and Guzman were in his bedroom when a gun he kept under his pillow fell to the floor. The two began fighting, and Anaya claims Guzman attempted to grab the weapon, resulting in two gunshots, one of which struck Guzman in the head, killing her.

Instead of calling for help, Anaya reportedly wrapped Guzman’s body in a comforter and placed her in the bed of his GMC Sierra pickup truck. He drove to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct around 5 a.m. and flagged down police officers in the parking lot.

Police Sgt. Brian Bower remarked on the unusual nature of such an encounter for patrol officers. Anaya’s hands were tested for gunshot residue, and he answered some preliminary questions before requesting an attorney.

Family and friends of the victim expressed concern about Guzman’s past in a relationship filled with reported abuse. Her brother, David Guzman, previously attempted to help her escape what he described as an isolating relationship.

A GoFundMe campaign set up by her family describes Guzman as a beloved daughter, sister, and mother. Her son is said to have lost the most significant figure in his life, while her mother mourns not just a daughter but a vital support presence.

Anaya remains in custody with a $1 million bond and was still detained as of Thursday.

Judicial misconduct scandal rocks Ohio court system

Chardon, OH

Geauga County Probate-Juvenile Court Judge Timothy Grendell has been sanctioned for sending two boys to a youth lock-up facility to compel them to visit their father. The Supreme Court of Ohio determined Grendell violated ethics rules for judges in the state.

The court issued an 18-month suspension with 12 months stayed. Grendell is suspended without pay and must remain misconduct-free throughout his suspension or serve the full term.

Grendell’s actions came to light during a difficult child custody case involving Stacy Hartman and Grant Glasier. The couple’s three children had been described as “seriously alienated” from their father as they refused contact with him for over three years.

Grendell took over the case in August 2019, following a request from another judge. Despite efforts at therapeutic visitation, the children continued to resist engaging with their father.

In May 2020, after learning of the ongoing refusal, Grendell ordered the boys to visit Glasier on alternating weekends, with a constable overseeing the transfer.

Hartman dropped off the boys as ordered, but they voiced their unwillingness to participate, prompting the constable to contact Grendell.

The judge directed that the boys be detained for unruliness due to their refusal and approved a three-day detention without communication with their parents.

An appeals court promptly stayed Grendell’s original visitation order. In July 2020, the judge faced scrutiny over a GoFundMe regarding the boys’ detention, which led to an enjoinment of Hartman.

The Supreme Court found Grendell breached rules regarding judicial conduct and objectivity. The court’s opinion highlighted Grendell’s use of detention as a means to enforce visitation, which was deemed improper.

The court stated Grendell’s actions undermined public confidence in the impartiality of the judiciary. The investigation concluded Grendell lost his objectivity and failed to perform impartially in the case.

Parents charged after son hospitalized for diabetes negligence

Middletown, PA Anthony Diffendall, 41, and Meghan Diffendall, 36, have been arrested following allegations of neglecting their son’s diabetes management. Their 13-year-old son was hospitalized twice within one week due to diabetic ketoacidosis.

The Lower Swatara Township Police Department announced the charges on Thursday. Both parents face one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

The boy was admitted to the hospital on June 22 and again on September 9 after his condition declined, prompting urgent care. Medical professionals indicated that the child’s health deteriorated due to a lack of insulin.

After being discharged on September 10, the boy was re-hospitalized on September 13 for distressing symptoms that included abnormal breathing and chest pain. Doctors confirmed another episode of ketoacidosis, resulting in his admission to the intensive care unit.

The Diffendalls informed medical staff that their son’s long-term insulin was denied by their insurance, leading them to use expired insulin. The boy’s pediatrician noted that he had not received his necessary prescriptions since January.

Court documents highlight concerns about chronic medical neglect, stating the boy should have had a refill every month. The pediatrician remarked that the child’s sugar levels indicated inadequate management of his diabetes.

During a class on managing their son’s condition, Meghan Diffendall reportedly did not attend. When questioned about her absence, Anthony Diffendall stated she was home sleeping.

Following their arrest, both parents appeared before Magisterial District Judge David H. Judy. The judge released them on their own recognizance and scheduled preliminary hearings for the afternoon of November 26.

Lawsuit against Wisconsin hospital dismissed after brain donation lost

Milwaukee, WI A lawsuit against Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin has been dismissed following the accidental disposal of a brain donated for research. The lawsuit was initiated by the parents of Ashtyn Fellenz, who passed away in December.

Ashtyn Fellenz was 24 years old and diagnosed with Canavan disease, a terminal neurological disorder. Her parents agreed to donate her brain for research to further understanding of the disease and possible treatments.

On November 17, Milwaukee Circuit Court Judge Timothy Witkowiak ruled that the Fellenzes could not pursue damages against the hospital. The judge stated that surrendering the donation meant the parents relinquished all rights to it.

Despite the ruling, Judge Witkowiak acknowledged the hospital’s mistake and expressed sympathy for the Fellenz family. He encouraged Children’s Wisconsin to review its protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The hospital admitted the error, stating it was “profoundly sorry” for the mistake. In May, before the lawsuit was filed, a spokesperson emphasized the need to reinforce protocols to avoid such errors.

Children’s Wisconsin reported that both sections of Ashtyn Fellenz’s brain were removed properly but were later improperly disposed of after months of storage.

Ashtyn underwent experimental gene therapy before her death and was among a few patients living longer due to the treatment. Canavan disease typically limits life expectancy to around ten years, but Ashtyn lived to 24.

Couple charged with murder days after divorce in Arkansas shooting

Rogers, AR A woman and her boyfriend face first-degree murder charges for the fatal shooting of her ex-husband. Amanda Penny, 40, and Michael Hogue, 51, were taken into custody this week, according to a statement from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred on July 11, when deputies responded to reports of a shooting along Highway 12. They found Kevin Nikel, a former WWE wrestler, with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

U.S. Marshal Service agents arrested Hogue in Fort Smith and Penny in Rogers. Nikel was the primary caregiver of the couple’s son, a situation that allegedly led to conflict following recent custody disputes.

Court documents revealed a prior court order limited Hogue’s contact with Nikel’s child. Additionally, Nikel was to maintain primary custody until Penny passed a required drug test, which she had not yet completed as of the day of the shooting.

Nikel’s mother was awarded custody of her grandson earlier this year. She expressed confusion over the circumstances surrounding her son’s death, stating she has many unanswered questions.

Reports indicate an argument occurred between Hogue and Nikel, possibly initiated through text messages. The nature of the confrontation remains under investigation as both defendants remain in the Benton County Jail without bond. Their initial court appearances have not yet been scheduled.

Mother pleads guilty after abandoning son on busy highway

Brookfield, WI A mother has pleaded guilty to abandoning her 12-year-old son after a dispute over his grades. Flor Escalante, 44, faced charges following the incident that occurred last year.

On Thursday, Escalante admitted to the charge of abandonment, while the judge dismissed the related child neglect charge. She received a sentence of two years probation.

The incident took place on November 8 when Escalante was driving her son to a Sylvan Learning Center. Following an argument, she pulled over on the I-94 highway and instructed him to exit the vehicle.

The boy was left to walk approximately two miles alone. Weather conditions were around 50 degrees, and he was not properly dressed for the temperature.

Multiple drivers alerted authorities about a child walking along the highway. They reported a “10- or 12-year-old on the shoulder crying.”

Police arrived and took the boy to the learning center where Escalante was waiting. She told officers that her son “didn’t appreciate everything [she] did for him.”

Escalante expressed she made him walk to teach him the value of hard work. She stated she intended to pick him up but could not locate him.

The case highlights concerns regarding parental responsibility and child safety on busy roads.

Minnesota woman sentenced to 40 years for ex-girlfriend’s murder

Minneapolis, MN A woman was sentenced this week to 40 years in prison for the murder of her ex-girlfriend, a case that drew significant attention. Margot Lewis, 33, was found guilty of second-degree murder with intent and second-degree murder without intent while using a dangerous weapon.

Lewis stabbed Liara Tsai, 35, in the neck on June 22, killing her in her studio apartment. After committing the crime, Lewis wrapped Tsai’s body in bedding and a tarp, then placed it in Tsai’s car.

The victim’s body was discovered after Lewis crashed the vehicle on Interstate 90 near Highway 42 in Eyota. Two good Samaritans who stopped to assist found Tsai’s remains in the back seat.

In court, prosecutors described the murder as a betrayal, highlighting that Tsai was writing love poems to Lewis while Lewis wrote about her desire to harm her.

Assistant Hennepin County Attorney Erin Lutz stated that Tsai’s death left a significant void for those who knew her.

Lewis exhibited a lack of remorse during the proceedings, claiming she loved Tsai and would not have killed her.

During sentencing, Judge Paul Scoggin cautioned Lewis against interrupting him as he explained the rationale behind her sentence.

The court permitted an upward sentencing departure, and Lewis received 517 days of credit for time spent in pretrial detention.

Lewis faces additional charges for concealing Tsai’s body.
