Cleaning Up Philly Trash Mayor Rolls Out Twice Per Week Trash Collection

Philadelphia, PA – The City of Philadelphia will expand twice-a-week trash collection to North Philadelphia in January as part of Mayor Cherelle Parker’s citywide effort to reduce litter and illegal dumping in densely populated neighborhoods with limited storage space.

City officials announced Phase II of the Twice-A-Week Trash Collection Program will launch Monday, January 5, expanding service to neighborhoods bounded by Vine Street to Hunting Park Avenue between Broad Street and the Schuylkill River, and from Vine Street to Glenwood Avenue between Broad Street and the Delaware River.

Under the program, households within the designated areas will receive two trash collections per week while recycling will continue to be collected once weekly on the first regular collection day. Officials said the increased frequency is intended to reduce overflow trash, illegal dumping along public rights-of-way, and unsanitary conditions in high-density areas.

Residents participating in the program may set out up to eight bags of trash or four containers with a maximum capacity of 32 gallons. Each household is also permitted to place up to two compactable household items, including furniture or wrapped mattresses and box springs, during each collection.

The Department of Sanitation outlined a rotating schedule that pairs regular collection days with a second trash-only pickup later in the week, including Saturday service in some areas. No second collection will occur during holiday weeks, and residents are required to place trash curbside between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. the night before or by 7 a.m. on collection day.

City officials emphasized that recycling must not be mixed with trash during the second pickup, warning that fines will be issued for violations. Recycling materials will only be collected on the first scheduled collection day each week.

The initiative is part of the administration’s One Philly, United City Cleaning Initiative, which combines sanitation services, enforcement, and community engagement to address litter, illegal dumping, and neighborhood cleanliness. Phase I of the program began in South Philadelphia in December.

Philadelphia is expanding twice-a-week trash collection to North Philadelphia in January to reduce illegal dumping and improve neighborhood cleanliness.
