PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD — A man sustained serious injuries Saturday morning after being attacked by two large dogs, prompting a Prince George’s County police officer to shoot one of the animals, officials said.

Officers from the Westphalia Division VIII responded to the 3200 block of Walters Lane around 10:35 a.m. for reports of a dog attack. Preliminary information indicates that upon arrival, one of the dogs charged at an officer, who then discharged his service weapon, striking the animal.

Animal Control takes custody of dogs following violent incident

The man attacked by the dogs was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries to his face. Police confirmed that no officers were harmed during the initial confrontation. Prince George’s County Animal Control arrived at the scene and took possession of both dogs; the injured dog later died from its wounds.

As per department protocol, the Internal Affairs Division is reviewing the officer’s use of force during the incident.

Secondary crash complicates response efforts

While en route to assist at the original scene, another patrol officer’s cruiser was involved in a collision at the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Walters Lane. The officer was taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been released. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured, authorities said.

The circumstances of the crash are under review, but police emphasized that no serious injuries resulted from the collision.

Officials have not released the identity of the injured man or provided additional details about the ownership of the dogs involved.
