Barrington Hart, 36, of Washington, D.C., was convicted today in Superior Court on a range of charges related to domestic violence, including assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and obstruction. The verdict, announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith, followed an incident involving Hart and his former romantic partner.

The altercation occurred on July 27, 2023, when Hart and the victim, who had reconciled their relationship for four days, engaged in a heated argument over the victim’s phone. Hart, accusing the victim of infidelity, became enraged and struck her on the head with a black and yellow firearm, resulting in a laceration. Despite her injury, Hart compelled the victim to accompany him to a job interview instead of seeking immediate medical attention. The victim later sought treatment, receiving nine staples to her head.

Following this incident, on August 4, 2023, the victim reported to the police that Hart had assaulted her again, slapping her and threatening her with the same firearm. Hart was subsequently arrested on August 4, 2023.

Even after his arrest, Hart continued to exert control over the victim. He instructed her twice during Department of Corrections Video Visits to refrain from testifying before the grand jury. Additionally, while incarcerated, Hart sent numerous threatening text messages to the victim.

Hart’s conviction underscores the serious consequences of domestic violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Sentencing for Hart will be determined by the court at a later date.
