DUNKIRK, Md. — A Calvert County man turned a day of golf into a $151,210 Powerball prize, using inspiration from the course to pick his winning numbers. This marks his second major lottery win, following a previous Mega Millions prize several years ago.

The winner told Maryland Lottery officials that his numbers were tied to a remarkable moment on the green. During a recent golf outing, a member of his group hit a blind hole-in-one on the 17th hole on the 21st day of the month. This inspired the numbers 1, 17, and 21. The group also used two golf carts, numbered 5 and 8, which he combined to select the number 58.

He purchased a Powerball ticket with five lines, all using the same first five numbers but with different Powerball numbers. In the Dec. 21 drawing, one of his lines matched four numbers plus the Powerball, netting an initial $50,000 prize. But thanks to the $1 Power Play feature, which tripled the winnings, the prize soared to $150,000. He also won $1,200 for matching four numbers on the other four lines, plus $10 from the Double Play option, bringing his total prize to $151,210.

The winner learned of his prize the next day and celebrated quietly. He plans to use part of his winnings to upgrade his golf equipment, including purchasing new clubs.

The lucky ticket was purchased at Dunkirk Fastop on Southern Maryland Boulevard, which has earned a reputation as a hotspot for big Lottery wins.

For this avid golfer, the incredible Powerball payday proves that sometimes the best inspiration comes from the fairway.
