Man shot in Columbia Heights apartment dies after two days in critical condition
Washington, DC – A man who was found clinging to life inside a Columbia Heights apartment early Saturday morning has died, launching a homicide investigation as police work to unravel what led to the deadly shooting in the heart of Northwest.
Just before 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, officers were called to the 3200 block of Hiatt Place, where they found 27-year-old Jermaine McGee-Holmes suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was barely conscious when first responders arrived and was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
McGee-Holmes remained hospitalized through the weekend, but on Monday, he died from his injuries, prompting a shift in the case from an aggravated assault to homicide.
Investigators are now working to determine what happened inside the apartment building and who pulled the trigger. No suspects or motives have been announced as of Tuesday morning.
The location, just blocks from the busy Columbia Heights Metro station, is surrounded by residential buildings, restaurants, and late-night foot traffic. Detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage that could provide answers.
