Pedestrian killed as hit and run driver vanishes from Hackensack crash scene
HACKENSACK, NJ — A man was killed after being struck by a vehicle in Hackensack early Friday morning while the driver fled the scene before police arrived, authorities said.
Hackensack police responded around 12:49 a.m. May 8 to the intersection of Essex Street and Summit Avenue for reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
When officers arrived, they found an adult male suffering from severe injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle.
Authorities said the vehicle involved had already fled the area.
The victim was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and investigators from the Bergen County Fatal Accident Task Force responded to the scene and launched a joint investigation with the Hackensack Police Department.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the victim or any description of the vehicle involved.
The investigation remains ongoing.
