A lunchtime outing turned violent when a woman was stabbed in the back by a stranger at a Decatur restaurant, sending her to the hospital and prompting a swift arrest.

DECATUR, GA – A woman eating lunch at a First Watch restaurant on Blackmon Drive was attacked Tuesday afternoon when a man she did not know approached her and stabbed her in the back, according to DeKalb County police. The incident unfolded around 12:40 p.m., disrupting the normally routine midday rush at the popular breakfast and brunch chain.

The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Walter Scrutchings, was taken into custody shortly after the attack and booked into the DeKalb County Jail on a charge of aggravated assault. Authorities said the victim and suspect were strangers, and no immediate motive has been released.

After being wounded, the woman managed to leave the restaurant and reach a nearby business, where she called for help. Emergency responders transported her to a local hospital. Police said her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Officers responding to the scene located Scrutchings and placed him under arrest without further incident. Jail records show he remains in custody, and no court date has been publicly listed.

Community reacts to violence

The attack has unsettled residents in the area, which sits just northeast of Atlanta and is typically described as quiet and walkable. Neighbors expressed concern over the sudden violence in a location known for daytime foot traffic.

“I’ve lived here most of my life and I kind of take for granted that it’s a safe, pedestrian-friendly area,” resident Charlie Cote told a local television station.

Police have not disclosed additional details about what may have led up to the stabbing and have not indicated whether the suspect has any prior connection to the area. The investigation remains ongoing.
