Two young children were found dead inside a burning vehicle in a San Antonio parking lot, leading to the arrest of a 34-year-old woman now facing capital murder charges.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Flames tore through a white Hyundai in a warehouse parking lot early Friday morning, drawing first responders to a grim discovery that has shaken the community. Inside the charred vehicle, authorities found the bodies of two children believed to be 5 and 7 years old.

Marlene Vidal, 34, was arrested and charged with two counts of capital murder of a person under 10 years of age and one count of arson, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators allege Vidal was responsible for the deaths of both children, who have not yet been formally identified.

Investigation details and arrest

The incident unfolded shortly after 5 a.m. Friday on Richland Hills Drive, when a person walking their dog spotted the vehicle engulfed in flames and called 911. According to San Antonio police, the witness encountered a woman at the scene who said she had already contacted authorities.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze, and officers then located the victims inside the vehicle. Vidal was quickly identified as a suspect and taken into custody later that day. She was booked into the Bexar County Jail Friday evening after initially not being processed immediately following her arrest.

“At this stage of the investigation, we have statements made by the suspect, along with surveillance video and evidence from the scene that indicate she was solely responsible for the death of these two children,” said Assistant San Antonio Police Chief Jesus Salame Jr. “She just indicated that she was the one that we would be looking for,” Salame added.

Victims and ongoing investigation

Authorities said the older child was a 7-year-old girl, while the younger child, a 5-year-old boy, was described as autistic and nonverbal. Family members have been notified, and police are continuing efforts to formally identify the victims.

Vidal is from Edinburg in the Rio Grande Valley but has family connections in San Antonio, according to police. A motive has not been confirmed, though investigators said mental health issues may have played a role.

“So what I’ll commit to you now is that we’re going to continue working to find the truth, seek justice for these children, and support everyone affected by this tragedy,” Salame said. “Everyone’s going to want to know why something like this happened, and unfortunately, the why is sometimes the hardest question to answer.”

Police said the investigation remains active as detectives continue speaking with relatives and others connected to the case. Vidal appeared before a judge Friday night, where she reportedly became emotional as the charges were read.
