Delaware State University Closed After Woman Shot and Killed Early Sunday Morning

DOVER, DE — The Dover Police Department and the Delaware State University Police Department are currently investigating a homicide after an 18-year-old female from Wilmington was fatally shot early Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 1:40 AM at Delaware State University, located at 1200 North DuPont Highway.

Editor’s Update: The headline initially indicated the woman was a student at the school. This has been corrected.

The young woman, who was not a student at the university, suffered a gunshot wound to her upper body near Warren-Franklin Hall. Despite immediate aid from officers and subsequent treatment at Bayhealth Kent Campus, she succumbed to her injuries.

Her identity has yet to be released, pending family notification.

Following the shooting, Delaware State University announced the closure of its campus, the cancellation of events, and an increase in police patrols.

The university emphasized its commitment to the safety and health of its community and noted that counseling services are available at the Tubman Laws Hall housing office. No other injuries were reported in the incident, and as of now, there is no suspect description available.
