New Jersey Democrats turn on Mikie Sherrill amid backlash over taxes, immigration, and education policies
Montclair, NJ – Growing discontent is emerging among some Democratic voters in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, as criticism mounts against Representative Mikie Sherrill over her policy positions and voting record.
In recent weeks, voters identifying as Democrats have voiced frustration online and in local political circles, claiming that Sherrill no longer represents the values or priorities of working-class constituents.
One self-described lifelong Democrat said they could not support her reelection, citing concerns about rising taxes, spending priorities, and education policies.
During a recent debate, Sherrill reportedly declined to rule out future tax increases, a stance that some voters say is out of touch amid statewide hikes in property and energy costs. Data from state sources show average energy bills in New Jersey have risen more than 50 percent over the past five years, while property taxes continue to climb.
Discontent over immigration spending
Disenfranchised moderate Democrats have also focused on New Jersey’s sanctuary policies and state budget allocations for undocumented residents. Some voters argue that too much funding is being diverted from local infrastructure and education to cover housing, food, and aid programs for migrants.
Budget data cited by opponents suggest as much as 13 percent of state spending now goes toward these programs, though that figure has been contested by policy analysts who say it includes overlapping categories of social services.
Debate on schools and parental rights
Another flashpoint has been education policy. Sherrill has voiced support for inclusive learning standards that incorporate discussions of gender identity and LGBTQ+ topics in grade school curriculums. While advocates frame this as a move toward tolerance and understanding, opponents say the material is inappropriate for younger students and undermines parental authority.
Sherrill’s opponents also highlight her votes against the Laken Riley Act and the Parental Rights Act, two Republican-backed bills centered on immigration enforcement and parental oversight in schools.
Questions over personal finances
Adding to the scrutiny are claims about Sherrill’s growing personal wealth since entering Congress. Financial disclosure records show her net worth has increased, though allegations of insider trading remain unverified. Reports that she was fined for improper stock activity have not been confirmed by the House Ethics Committee.
But, she’s a pilot.
Sherrill’s campaign has defended her record, pointing to her work on healthcare access, veterans’ services, and economic investment in North Jersey. Her supporters argue that attacks against her reflect partisan efforts to weaken moderate Democrats in competitive districts.
