Dover Police Use Humor to Warn Drivers Against Passing Stopped School Buses

DOVER, DELAWARE — The Dover Police Department issued a warning to drivers on Friday, reminding them not to pass stopped school buses, using a light-hearted social media post to convey the message. The department’s Facebook post featured a staged photo of a traffic stop alongside a cautionary tale about “Emily,” a fictional driver who passed a school bus because she was late for her yoga class.

In the story, Emily’s rush to her class ended with her being pulled over and receiving a ticket, missing her chance to attend the session. The post, which was intended to be humorous, emphasized the importance of stopping for school buses with extended stop signs.

“Don’t be Emily. Stop for the bus!” the Dover Police Department advised in the post. The message is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to promote road safety and ensure that drivers adhere to laws designed to protect students.

The photo included in the post was staged specifically for educational purposes, reinforcing the seriousness of the issue despite the humorous tone. The department frequently uses social media to engage with the community and raise awareness on critical safety issues.

The post serves as a reminder that passing a stopped school bus is illegal and can result in significant fines, as well as endanger the safety of children boarding or leaving the bus.
