Calvert County deputies say Charlotte Diane Stanford showed signs of impairment after an erratic-driving complaint in Dunkirk

DUNKIRK, MD – A Temple Hills woman accused of nearly causing several crashes during an erratic drive through Dunkirk allegedly tried to drink from an open bottle of wine when deputies ordered her out of the vehicle, leading to her arrest on DUI and drug charges.

The incident occurred Aug. 28 at approximately 5:52 p.m. near Town Center Boulevard, according to the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded after receiving a traffic complaint about a vehicle allegedly driving erratically, nearly causing several collisions and traveling with its hazard lights activated.

The driver was identified as Charlotte Diane Stanford, 37, of Temple Hills.

The sheriff’s office said Stanford displayed slurred speech, glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol.

When a deputy asked Stanford to get out of the vehicle, she allegedly attempted to drink from an open bottle of wine before being detained.

Stanford refused to participate in standardized field sobriety testing, according to the sheriff’s office.

A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered an orange circular pill suspected of being clonazepam, which authorities identified as a Schedule IV controlled dangerous substance.

Stanford was arrested and charged with DWI, DUI, reckless driving, negligent driving and possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis.

The charges are allegations and have not been proven in court.
