Elderly pedestrian killed in Newark shopping center parking lot crash

An elderly woman died after being struck by a pickup truck in a Newark shopping center parking lot Wednesday.

NEWARK, Del. — Newark Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Wednesday morning in the parking lot of a shopping center on the 200 block of East Main Street.

Officers responded to the scene at approximately 9:30 a.m. after reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a pickup truck while crossing the lot toward nearby storefronts. According to a preliminary investigation, the driver was traveling through the lot when the collision occurred.

Emergency medical aid was provided at the scene by Newark officers and EMS personnel from Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company. The victim, an elderly woman, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital in serious condition but later died from her injuries during the overnight hours.

The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and was identified by police. No arrests have been made at this time.

Investigation ongoing, charges under review

The Newark Police Traffic Response Unit continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash. The Delaware Attorney General’s Office is reviewing the case alongside Newark Police to determine whether any charges will be filed.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
