Manchester Township officials are opening a cooling shelter for two days as dangerous temperatures and an Extreme Heat Warning grip the region.
MANCHESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. — Manchester Township will open a cooling shelter for residents Thursday and Friday as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for Ocean County.
The Manchester Township Office of Emergency Management announced the shelter will operate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, and Friday, July 3.
The cooling shelter will be located at the Manchester Township Emergency Services Building – Annex, 82 Lacey Road in Whiting, the former Whiting First Aid Building.
Officials said the air-conditioned facility is open to all Manchester Township residents seeking relief from the heat. Older adults, young children, people with medical conditions and residents without adequate air conditioning are especially encouraged to use the shelter.
Residents planning to visit are encouraged to bring any necessary medications, a refillable water bottle, a cell phone and charger, along with snacks or quiet activities if desired.
Township officials also urged residents to stay in air-conditioned locations whenever possible, drink plenty of water, limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, never leave children or pets inside vehicles, and check on elderly neighbors, relatives and friends.
