Family dog rescued as Stamford firefighters battle two alarm blaze in freezing conditions

STAMFORD, CT – A family dog was pulled from a burning home and resuscitated by firefighters after a two-alarm blaze erupted Saturday afternoon on Montauk Drive. The dramatic rescue unfolded as bitter cold and thick smoke complicated efforts to contain the fast-moving fire that broke out shortly before 1:40 p.m.

According to Deputy Chief Philip Hayes of the Stamford Fire Department, emergency crews were dispatched to 178 Montauk Drive after reports of black smoke billowing from a two-story, wood-frame duplex. Firefighters arrived within minutes and confirmed flames coming from the second floor. Residents told first responders that one adult and three children had safely escaped but that their dog remained trapped inside.

Engine 3 firefighters advanced a hose line to the second floor, while Truck 3 crews launched a search for the missing animal. The main body of fire was located in a front bedroom and quickly knocked down, but heavy smoke filled the upper level. During their search, firefighters located the dog unresponsive in a rear bedroom. Using specialized pet resuscitation masks, crews administered oxygen, reviving the animal before transporting it to Cornell Animal Hospital on Canal Street. The dog arrived breathing but remained in serious condition.

A second alarm was struck at 1:47 p.m. as fire commanders worked to ensure the blaze hadn’t spread into the attic. Crews faced additional hazards from freezing weather, prompting additional manpower and safety measures on scene. The fire was declared under control at 2:22 p.m.

The family was displaced due to smoke and fire damage. The American Red Cross assisted in relocating the adult and three children to temporary housing. The adjoining unit, which was unoccupied at the time, sustained only minor damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office.
