Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash Under Investigation in Newark

NEWARK, DE—Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred early this morning on Christiana Road in Newark, resulting in the death of a 41-year-old man from Newark.

The incident happened on May 29, 2024, around 2:35 a.m. A blue 2024 Chevrolet Equinox was traveling southbound on I-95 before taking the exit ramp to Christiana Road westbound. At the base of the ramp, the vehicle failed to navigate the curve, veering off into a grassy area beside the roadway. The vehicle then drove through a guardrail, crossed the westbound lanes of Christiana Road, and finally crashed into a raised concrete barrier.

Following the crash, a small fire broke out in the engine compartment of the Chevrolet. Bystanders who witnessed the accident quickly intervened, pulling the driver from the vehicle and attempting life-saving measures. The driver was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been disclosed pending notification of his family.

The road was closed for about four hours as the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit examined the scene and cleared the debris. Investigators are urging witnesses or anyone with information about the crash to contact Senior Corporal M. Calio at (302) 365-8483, send a private message via Facebook to the Delaware State Police, or reach out to Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
