NEWARK, N.J. – The FBI and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are continuing to investigate reports of drone sightings across New Jersey but have found no evidence of a national security or public safety threat.
In a joint statement issued Monday, the agencies said they have not confirmed that the reported drone activity involves unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and are exploring whether the sightings could be manned aircraft or misidentification.
A 2 pm classified drone briefing has been scheduled in Washington, D.C., with testimony by the FBI and CIA, Fox News announced moments ago.
“We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus,” the statement said, adding that many reports appear to involve lawful manned aircraft rather than drones.
The investigation involves local law enforcement, the New Jersey State Police, and federal partners deploying various detection technologies. Officials noted that no drone activity has been confirmed in restricted airspace.
The agencies acknowledged concerns about the security risks posed by UAS but emphasized that “no such malicious activity or intent” has been identified. They also pointed to the need for stronger authorities to address the challenges posed by drone sightings.
While the investigation continues, federal authorities maintain that the reported sightings do not currently signal a broader security threat.
