STAMFORD, CT – A Saturday afternoon fire broke out at a multi-residential home on Willowbrook Avenue, sending heavy smoke through the structure before firefighters brought the blaze under control within 20 minutes.
The incident occurred around 1:55 p.m. at 73 Willowbrook Avenue in Stamford’s Cove neighborhood.
Responding crews from the Stamford Fire Department arrived to find smoke pushing from the roof eaves of the two-and-a-half-story building and quickly launched an interior attack.

Firefighters act quickly to contain attic blaze
Engines 4 and 1 advanced hoses through heavy smoke conditions on the first floor while Rescue 1 searched for trapped occupants. Truck 2 crews ventilated the attic using ground ladders and a tower ladder, helping to release heat and smoke trapped inside the upper level.
All residents had safely evacuated before firefighters arrived, and the fire was confined to the attic, preventing spread to adjoining units.
Damage limited but ventilation hindered
According to officials, the home sustained moderate fire and smoke damage. Investigators noted that gable vents had been sealed with foam insulation and plywood sheathing, which restricted smoke ventilation and worsened interior conditions. The American Red Cross was called to assist displaced residents.
Large coordinated response
Four engine companies, one heavy rescue unit, and one aerial apparatus responded, supported by the on-duty Shift Commander, the North District Deputy Chief, and additional personnel from the Safety, Mechanical, and Fire Marshal’s Divisions. Stamford EMS and police also assisted on scene.
Investigation underway
The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office.
