NEW YORK, N.Y. — A fire inside the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Monday morning caused significant damage and sent one firefighter to the hospital after crews battled flames hidden deep within the building’s upper levels. The blaze, reported around 10 a.m., spread through an electrical area and into concealed spaces near the roof, complicating efforts to fully contain it.
Firefighters located the source in an electrical room between the fourth and fifth floors, where lighting and electrical equipment had caught fire, according to the FDNY.
Hidden fire spreads through upper structure

Crews entered the theater and conducted searches while working to knock down the visible flames. But the situation intensified as additional fire was discovered in concealed spaces extending from the fifth floor up to the roof.
Assistant Chief David Simms said the fire proved difficult to access due to the theater’s complex layout, including catwalks and rigging systems commonly used for stage productions.
Challenging conditions inside historic venue
The structure of the theater created obstacles for firefighters trying to reach the hidden pockets of fire. Tight, elevated spaces and layered construction meant crews had to navigate carefully while continuing suppression efforts.
“It was a deep-seated fire that was difficult to access,” Simms said, describing the conditions inside the building.
