Fire Hazard Alert Batteries in Recycling Trucks Ignite Blaze in Somerset County

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ—A fire erupted in a Somerset County recycling truck, triggered by improperly disposed-of batteries in the recycling materials. Police are warning residents against throwing lithium batteries in the trash.

Authorities emphasize the incident as a stark reminder of the hazards posed by placing batteries in bi-monthly recycling collections.

Officials urge residents to adhere to proper disposal methods for batteries to ensure the safety of recycling personnel and the community. Batteries should be taken to Household Hazardous Waste Collections, held several times annually. For collection schedules and more information, visit the Somerset County website.
