Frigid blast triggers Code Blue alert in Princeton as temperatures plummet

PRINCETON, NJ – A Code Blue emergency has been declared in Princeton as dangerously cold air grips the region, prompting town officials to open a public warming center to protect residents from the extreme weather.

The Princeton Police Department issued the alert Saturday morning, citing the threat of subfreezing conditions that could put vulnerable residents at risk. In response, the Community Room inside the Witherspoon Hall Municipal Building at 400 Witherspoon Street will serve as a warming center from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The center will provide a warm, safe indoor space where residents can seek relief, charge electronic devices, and avoid exposure to the life-threatening cold. Officials emphasized that the facility is open to everyone, including individuals who may be without reliable heat or shelter.

Local weather forecasts show temperatures remaining well below freezing through the evening, with wind chills making it feel even colder. Residents are urged to minimize time outdoors, dress in layers, and check on neighbors, particularly seniors and those without heat. Pet owners are also reminded to bring animals inside or ensure they have adequate shelter.

Authorities say community cooperation is critical during Code Blue conditions to ensure that no one is left exposed to the cold. Town officials encouraged residents to spread the word about available warming services to those who may not have access to social media or news alerts.
