Governor Murphy’s Radical Policies Resulted in New Jersey Affordability Crisis, Legislators Say

TRENTON, NJ — Senators Anthony M. Bucco and Declan O’Scanlon criticized Governor Murphy for neglecting pressing issues such as New Jersey’s affordability crisis, following the state’s poor performance on the 2024 State Business Tax Climate Index.

The Tax Foundation’s latest report ranked New Jersey last on its index, highlighting the state’s high property, corporate income, and individual income taxes. According to the Senators, the ranking reflects poorly on Governor Murphy’s policy choices, which they claim ignore vital issues affecting everyday residents.

“Governor Murphy’s progressive priorities have burdened New Jerseyans with some of the highest taxes in the country,” said Bucco, Senate Republican Leader. “Trenton Democrats have followed Murphy in approving these policies, neglecting opportunities to lower taxes.”

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority recently approved a 3% toll increase effective January 1, 2024. This marks the fourth toll hike since 2020, leading to nearly 50% higher toll costs for commuters compared to when Murphy first took office.

“None of these toll increases would have happened under Republican leadership,” stated O’Scanlon, Senate Republican Budget Officer. “Instead, funds have been directed toward non-essential projects, while the real issues affecting New Jerseyans go unaddressed.”

Both Senators emphasized their readiness to tackle the state’s affordability crisis, criticizing the current administration for its handling of state finances and policy priorities.
