Officer involved gun battle ends with suspect dead inside Spencer store
Spencer, MA – A fast-moving police response to a violent incident escalated into a gun battle inside a retail store, ending with a suspect dead and a police officer wounded, authorities said.
The incident began shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday when officers responded to a 911 call near 20 Main Street in Spencer. Police arriving on scene located an injured individual suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Emergency crews rendered aid and transported the victim to UMass Medical Center.
Roughly 12 minutes later, officers located a person matching the suspect’s description near West Main Street. Authorities said the suspect produced a firearm as officers approached, and shots were fired.
The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Patrick Madison, fled on foot to a nearby Family Dollar store, with officers in pursuit. Police quickly evacuated the store and surrounding businesses and called in additional resources, including negotiators, SWAT, K-9 units, drones, and the State Police Air Wing.

Members of the CEMLEC SWAT team entered the store and found Madison inside a closed bathroom. An exchange of gunfire followed, during which a Millbury Police officer was injured and Madison was fatally shot.
The wounded officer was transported to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. No other injuries were reported.
The officer-involved shooting is now under investigation by Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, along with State Police Crime Scene Services, the Ballistics Section, and the Spencer Police Department.
