Hackers target business in paycheck fraud scheme

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A Stafford County business narrowly avoided losing money after hackers allegedly breached the company’s system and attempted to issue themselves a fraudulent paycheck, authorities said.

The fraud investigation began Wednesday, May 7, around 6:11 p.m. along Madison Avenue, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Suter responded to the report after the victim discovered unauthorized activity involving the company’s financial accounts.

Investigators said the suspect gained access to the business system and attempted to pay themselves using a company paycheck transaction.

The bank detected the suspicious activity and stopped the transfer before any money was lost.

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.

The Stafford County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information related to the incident to contact investigators at 540-658-4400.
