Old license plate from driveway car delivers shocking $50K Maryland lottery win

Maryland woman turns old license plate into lucky $50K Pick 5 jackpot

CHARLOTTE HALL, MD — A St. Mary’s County grandmother finally found a use for an old car sitting in the driveway after the vehicle’s license plate numbers helped her score a $50K Maryland Lottery jackpot.

The Southern Maryland woman told lottery officials she had grown tired of seeing her husband’s old car parked outside the home and decided to start using the five-digit license plate number as her Pick 5 combination.

She stuck with the numbers for more than a year before they finally hit during an April drawing.

While checking the winning numbers on her phone, the woman initially struggled to read the results without her glasses.

“Wait a minute. That looks like my numbers,” she recalled thinking.

The medical worker soon realized she had matched every number perfectly.

Because she placed a $1 straight bet, the longtime Pick 5 player won $50,000.

Lottery officials said the winner plans to use part of the money to pay bills and spend the rest spoiling her grandchildren.

“I just stick to Pick 5. That is my game,” the winner said.

The winning ticket was sold at Atrium Spirits located at 37680 Mohawk Drive in Charlotte Hall.

The St. Mary’s County retailer will receive a $500 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
