Heavy traffic prompts intermittent closures on Stew Leonard Drive in Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. — Authorities have implemented a traffic diversion on Stew Leonard Drive due to an unusually high volume of vehicles ahead of an incoming snowstorm and Super Bowl weekend shopping, the Yonkers Police Department announced Saturday.

Traffic congestion in the area has reached levels that could hinder emergency vehicle access, prompting officials to intermittently close and reopen the roadway throughout the day.

Police are advising motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes to prevent further delays. It remains unclear how long the traffic measures will remain in place.

“Stew Leonard Drive will be intermittently opened and closed for the remainder of the day to ensure the safety of all shoppers,” the department said in a social media post.

Officials continue to monitor conditions as shoppers crowd the area ahead of the Super Bowl and expected winter weather.
