Hoboken approves major North End redevelopment bringing housing park and new city garage

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Hoboken officials have approved final redevelopment agreements for four long-blighted properties at 1500 Willow and Park Avenue, paving the way for a major revitalization project that city leaders are calling a historic step forward for the Mile Square City.

Mayor Ravinder S. Bhalla announced the approval, describing the plan as a “big win for Hoboken.” The project will transform underused industrial land into a mixed-use gateway featuring new housing — including 73 affordable units — expanded public open space, and a long-needed municipal garage.

The redevelopment is part of the broader North End Plan, first outlined while Bhalla served on the City Council, aimed at guiding growth in the northern section of Hoboken with a balance of housing, transportation, and green space. The initiative aligns with ongoing work at the nearby 1500 Garden Street site, where construction of the new Harborside Park will bring additional waterfront access and recreational areas to residents.

City officials said the approvals mark years of coordinated planning and community input. “Seeing this project now moving forward is truly historic,” Bhalla said, thanking Director Chris Brown, city staff, and the development team for their role in advancing the plan.

With final agreements in place, Hoboken’s North End is set to undergo one of its most transformative redevelopments in decades, combining housing, infrastructure, and green space to reshape the city’s northern gateway.
