ICE arrests child predators and human smugglers in nationwide sweep targeting ‘worst of the worst’

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Friday that it arrested multiple undocumented immigrants with violent criminal histories, including child predators, sex offenders, and human smugglers, during a nationwide enforcement operation conducted on July 31.

The operation, described by ICE officials as part of its ongoing mission to remove the most dangerous noncitizens from American communities, targeted individuals with serious criminal convictions across several states.

Among those arrested were:

  • Taide Garcia-Penaloza, 45, from Mexico, convicted of indecency with a child involving sexual contact in Bexar County, Texas
  • Antonio Nava-Capilla, 48, from Mexico, convicted of child abuse causing serious injury in Park City, Utah
  • Angel Ivan Ramirez-Escobedo, 20, from Mexico, convicted of human smuggling in El Paso, Texas
  • Jose Hernan Lucero-Lucero, 35, from Ecuador, convicted in Suffolk County, New York, of unlawful surveillance and endangering a child under 17
  • Leuam Vannavong, 50, from Laos, convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a family member in Grand Haven, Michigan

“These are not low-level offenders. These are violent predators and smugglers,” said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “ICE is removing individuals who pose serious threats to public safety.”

All individuals named in the enforcement action are currently in ICE custody pending further proceedings.

The arrests come amid ongoing immigration enforcement efforts under the Trump administration and Secretary Kristi Noem, with officials pledging increased focus on individuals with felony convictions and those involved in crimes against children.
