ICE launches new immigration sweeps in Lakewood and Ocean County targeting criminal illegal aliens

LAKEWOOD, NJ – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents conducted a series of immigration enforcement operations across Ocean County this week, focusing on individuals with active criminal detainers and outstanding deportation orders. The coordinated effort marks one of the largest federal immigration actions in the area in recent years, with agents seen in Lakewood, downtown business districts, and near a Home Depot store.

According to ICE officials, the operation is part of the federal government’s ongoing crackdown on criminal illegal aliens, emphasizing that those targeted have “already been through the legal process” and are subject to removal under existing orders. However, agents confirmed that when encountering additional individuals unlawfully present during the course of enforcement actions, they will verify status and proceed according to federal immigration law.

Residents reported seeing marked and unmarked ICE and HSI vehicles near several housing complexes and commercial locations throughout Lakewood and Toms River. Federal authorities did not immediately release the number of arrests but confirmed the operation will continue into the week.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a division of ICE, issued an advisory reminding individuals under deportation orders that they can “self-deport” to avoid extended detention or permanent bans from reentry. Self-deportation, formally referred to as “self-removal,” allows individuals unlawfully present in the U.S. to leave voluntarily rather than await arrest, detention, and formal removal proceedings.

The agency’s fact sheet explains that individuals who self-deport may, in certain cases, avoid harsher reentry bars that can range from three years to permanent exclusion. ICE officials caution that once an individual is arrested, the process becomes mandatory and immediate.

The sweeps come amid renewed federal emphasis on immigration enforcement under directives to prioritize removal of individuals with criminal records or previous deportation orders. Ocean County, which has a growing immigrant population, has seen several similar enforcement efforts in recent years.
