Montgomery County man wins $450K by playing same lottery numbers nine times
CLARKSBURG, MD – A Montgomery County man claimed a $450,000 windfall after matching all five winning numbers in Maryland’s Bonus Match 5 drawing — and he did it by playing the exact same number combination nine times in a single draw.
The win occurred on Saturday, January 17, when the numbers 7, 11, 27, 34, and 35 were drawn. The winner had purchased nine identical plays using those numbers, earning the game’s $50,000 top prize on each one for a total of $450,000.
The man, a regular but occasional player, started repeating the number combination after previously winning $130. Motivated by the small prize, he began buying multiple plays of the same set of numbers using Bonus Match 5’s discounted bulk pricing, which offers nine plays for $6.
The winning ticket was purchased at the Harris Teeter grocery store located at 22700 Sweet Shrub Drive in Clarksburg. For selling nine top-prize winning tickets, the retailer will receive a $4,500 bonus from the Maryland Lottery.
Because the drawing took place on a Saturday night and the following Monday was a state holiday, the winner had to wait until Tuesday, January 20, to claim the prize at Lottery headquarters in Baltimore.
He stated that the prize money will be used to establish a college fund for his grandchildren and to cover the cost of a celebratory family dinner.
Bonus Match 5 is a daily draw game offering a $50,000 top prize, with players able to increase their chances through multiple identical plays. The Maryland Lottery encourages players to play responsibly and has contributed over $18 billion to public programs since its inception.
