NEW YORK, N.Y. – A person is in custody after deploying an incendiary device outside 26 Federal Plaza on Monday morning, according to the FBI.
“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza,” the FBI said in a statement. “The individual has been taken into custody and the FBI New York Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating the incident.”
The explosion occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. outside the federal building, which houses multiple federal agencies, including U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and FBI offices.
The incident comes just weeks before the 25th anniversary of the deadly 9-11 terrorist attacks.
Large law enforcement response
Video from the scene showed the moment of the explosion, followed by federal agents and law enforcement officers rushing from the building with weapons drawn before the suspect was apprehended.
Authorities shut down the sidewalk outside the building and evacuated portions of the facility while officers secured the area.
The New York Police Department confirmed it responded to the incident and remained on scene alongside federal authorities.
Firearm recovered as investigation continues
It has been confirmed that a firearm was recovered in connection with the incident..
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or announced any criminal charges.
The FBI’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force has assumed the lead in the investigation. Officials have not disclosed a possible motive or whether the incident is believed to be terrorism-related.
