Jackson Schools Give Students Juneteenth Off While Canceling Veterans Day

The Jackson School District will close schools for Juneteenth during the upcoming academic year while students will report to class on Veterans Day, a scheduling decision that is drawing attention among some parents and residents.

The Jackson School District’s 2025-26 academic calendar reflects a growing trend taking place in school systems across New Jersey and the nation: Juneteenth is now a day off for students and staff, while Veterans Day is observed through classroom instruction rather than a school closure.

Despite pressure from parents, the Jackson School District maintained their planned schedule last November and students did not get the federal holiday off. And they doubled down in 2026, by ignoring those complaints.

Under the approved calendar, schools would be closed on June 19 in observance of Juneteenth National Independence Day. Schools would remain open on Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

Two Federal Holidays, Two Different Approaches

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 after President Joe Biden signed legislation recognizing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Veterans Day has a much longer history as a federal holiday. Originally established following World War I and expanded in 1954, the holiday honors all U.S. military veterans who have served the nation.

While both are federal holidays, school districts are not required to close for every federal observance.

Why Districts Make These Decisions

New Jersey school districts must meet state instructional requirements while also accounting for staff contracts, transportation schedules, weather-related closures, and other operational considerations.

As a result, districts often face difficult choices when determining which holidays will result in school closures and which will be recognized through educational programming. Jackson’s school schedule is packed with Jewish religious holidays, limiting the amount of federal holidays the district can take off.

Many districts now use Veterans Day as an instructional opportunity, inviting veterans into classrooms, holding assemblies, and teaching lessons focused on military service and American history.

Juneteenth’s Rapid Growth

Juneteenth’s inclusion on school calendars has expanded rapidly since its federal recognition.

For generations, the holiday was largely observed in Texas and within Black communities around the country. Since becoming a federal holiday, however, many government agencies, businesses, colleges, and K-12 school districts have added it to their official calendars.

Across New Jersey, districts have gradually incorporated Juneteenth into both their curriculum and holiday schedules.

A Question of Priorities

The calendar decision highlights broader questions many districts are now facing.

Should schools close for every federal holiday? Is it more meaningful for students to learn about certain events in the classroom rather than receive a day off? And how should districts balance newer federal holidays with longstanding traditions?

The answers vary by community and school board.

In Jackson, the current calendar means students will be home on Juneteenth while attending classes on Veterans Day, where military service and veteran recognition may instead become part of the school day’s lessons and activities.

Part of a National Trend

Jackson is far from alone in making similar adjustments.

School districts throughout New Jersey and across the country have increasingly shifted from blanket holiday closures to educational observances for some federal holidays. At the same time, Juneteenth has become a more prominent fixture on school calendars following its federal designation.
