Skowhegan, ME – This story feels like something out of a courtroom drama, but it’s very much real life. Nicholas Carter, 31, who had just been convicted of aggravated assault on a 14-month-old child, decided to stage an impromptu jailbreak—right out of the Somerset County Superior Courthouse in Skowhegan, Maine.
Despite being handcuffed, Carter bolted through the courthouse, evading an attempt to block him in what can only be described as a chaotic dash for freedom. Videos show him sprinting down a hallway, then out of the building, leaving behind a trail of bewildered onlookers.
But here’s where things take a cinematic turn. As Carter made a run for it across the parking lot, a group of determined individuals—including two jurors and a detective—weren’t about to let him get away. After a mad dash, Carter’s escape came to a rather undignified end when he tripped and fell in a nearby yard. The pursuers were quick to apprehend him, bringing his brief flight to a swift close.
Carter had just been found guilty after a three-day trial, and while he’s now waiting for sentencing on the aggravated assault charge, his attempted courthouse escape may very well factor into that decision. One thing’s for sure: his day in court didn’t end the way he hoped.
